A project three years in the making, this new two ram baler will replace the current failing IPS baler and will support Garten’s not-for-profit recycling business in securing existing jobs and create additional jobs down the road. Every week, around 1.5 million pounds of materials collected and sorted for recycling at Garten must be baled in order to be shipped and sold. This baler is integral to the entire recycling operation which currently supports jobs for many individuals with significant disabilities and other barriers to employment. A new baler means that the sorters, equipment operators, maintenance personnel and technicians can continue to be employed.
After being delayed for weeks due to inclement weather in the East Coast, the two ram baler built by The American Baler Company has finally made it from Bellevue, Ohio to its final destination at Garten’s North Salem recycling facility.
The installation process took a little over a week and involved professional installers, electricians and technicians working together to get the new baler up and running for Garten. Over the next few days, there will be tests done to make sure the baler is properly installed and operating normally. Everyone at the recycling facility is eager to finally witness the new baler in action and see the new efficiencies that it will bring.
The Baler Project is finally a reality for the employees at Garten’s recycling facility thanks to the public/private partnership with the City of Salem, State DEQ, Collin’s Foundation and Garten’s own capital reserve. “It was wonderful to see the federal funds we provided at work,” said Councilor Jose Gonzalez, Salem city councilor for the area. “This investment helps create more jobs in our community and reduce our collective impact on the environment. Another example of what’s great in North Salem.” Because of the new two-ram baler, Garten’s largest department will continue to operate and help further Garten’s mission of supporting individuals with disabilities in their effort to contribute to the community through employment, career, and retirement opportunities.
